How to Stay Safe While Working in a Warehouse

According to the National Safety Council, every 7 seconds a worker is injured on the job. Manufacturing, production, and other types of warehouse jobs rank among the top 5 industries with the largest number of workplace injuries, being outpaced only by service workers, such as law enforcement, and those who work in transportation and shipping.

There are more than 100 million production days lost every year due to workplace injuries. For the workers who suffer them, the consequences can be devastating. Not only is there the financial impact of time off of work, but certain injuries can also have a long-lasting impact on your health and ability to work long term.

When you’re working in a warehouse, safety should always be one of your top concerns. Here are 4 tips to keep you safe:

    1. Receive the Proper Training

Working in a warehouse, you’re -practically guaranteed to come in contact with a range of equipment, some of which you might little or no experience using. It’s critical to ensure you’ve been properly trained in handling and operating any piece of equipment safely before you use it. If someone asks you to perform a task using equipment you’re not trained to use, the safest response is to refuse.

Take all safety courses and certifications your workplace offers, including those for equipment and procedures you’re already familiar with. A little refresher never hurt anyone, and new features or updates can mean a change in operating and safety procedures.

    1. Don’t Skimp on Safety Equipment

Safety equipment is there for a reason – to keep you and your coworkers safe from injuries. Many warehouse workers are aware of the importance of using safety equipment or wearing safety gear while on task, but not everyone understands how important this is even when not directly involved in a job-related task.

You should be suited up as if you were working with the equipment before you walk onto the warehouse floor. You never know when you might get asked to help with a task, but there is also the risk of falling debris, malfunctioning equipment, and human error that can put you at risk just walking through a warehouse.

    1. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

In the warehouse environment, your surroundings are constantly in flux. Things are always moving, people are in motion, equipment is in use, and tripping hazards are plentiful. When on the warehouse floor, it’s critical for safety to be acutely aware of your surroundings. Never allow yourself to become distracted, be aware of what’s happening, and be on the defensive for dangers that might appear suddenly.

    1. Take Care of Yourself

Warehouse work can be strenuous, making it important to take care of yourself while on the job. The temperature in warehouse environments can be excessively warm, especially during hot summer months. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day, taking your breaks as scheduled, and slowing down and resting if you begin to feel tired, lightheaded, dizzy, or ill.
