How to Thicken Your Skin to Survive Long Days on the Job

thicken your skin

Working long days on the job in a light industrial environment can be stressful and tiring. But did you know that developing a “thick skin” is one of the best skills you can have when it comes to reducing stress? It helps you to let things roll off your back. Thankfully we all have daily opportunities to learn, that can help us develop a mental toughness that will thicken our skin.

Motivation

Being mentally tough really means being focused completely on something. We are more likely to get irritated at the little things when we aren’t focused; or during times when we are focused on the wrong things. It isn’t too hard to be mentally tough and have a thick skin when things are going your way, but when things aren’t going your way – that’s when having thick skin will help you out.

Take some time to define what it is you really want, write it down, and read it over now and again. This will help you stay motivated and help get you through the rough patches. Focus on the things you want, rather than the things you don’t want.

Let Haters Hate

Another way to develop a thick skin is to ignore the haters you have to deal with. We are affected by the people who surround us. Cheerleaders, or other people in your corner, can lift you up when you’re feeling blue; and negative people can drag you down when things aren’t going our way.

Don’t dwell on the negatives. Work on finding a fix or other solution to the difficulty you’re experiencing and move on toward your ultimate goals. Soon, you’ll be moving ahead, leaving all those haters behind.

Give It Your All To Reduce Stress During Long Days On The Job

When you do something, do you give it your all? Only you will know if you’ve actually given 100 percent of yourself to a particular task or situation. By promising yourself that you will give 100 percent effort on the critical tasks, you’ll be surprised how little anything else will bother you. When you know you’ve done the best you possibly can in a given situation the small stuff doesn’t bother you as much.

Body and Mind

Vince Lombardi once said that fatigue was the only thing capable of making “cowards of us all.” He was right. You can’t be brave in the face of adversity if you’re exhausted physically or mentally.

Yes, there’s always something else to be done, but burning the candle at both ends means the results will suffer. You might pull it off for a day, maybe two, but you’ll do damage in the long run. Fatigue makes us irritable, clouds our focus, and makes personal interaction difficult.

Take care of your body, rest properly, eat food that sustains you, exercise appropriately and give your mind time to be still. By resting up, you’ll be ready for any difficulties that may crop up at a given point.

Developing a thick skin isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, but it’s worthwhile and will improve your life in the long run. Finishing long days on the job without feeling stressed is something that not only improves your life but the lives of those around you.
