You Should Be Ditching These 5 Work Habits

We’re far enough into the new year, that’s it a good time to sit back and think about how all those new year, new you plans are going. So many of us jump into the new year, full of enthusiasm and ready to make changes. It usually doesn’t take long for some of those “resolutions” to fall to the side, especially the less practical ones. Now is the perfect time to take stock of your goals for the coming year and begin focusing on those that really matter – like the ones that will fuel your career.

Want this to be the year you grow in your career? Here are 5 damaging work habits that you should ditch today.

    1. Scattered Monday

If you greet your workweek unprepared, you’re going to spend at least part, if not all, of your Monday trying to get your bearings and struggling to keep up. Take a few minutes before you leave on Friday, or a little time over the weekend if needed, to set a plan in place for Monday.

    1. Not Taking Breaks

Working through your breaks might make you appear like an uber-dedicated worker on the surface, but it’s also likely to reflect negatively in the quality of your work. Evidence has shown us time and again that taking breaks during your workday, especially if you’re feeling stuck or in a rut, is crucial for optimizing work performance. Allow yourself a full lunch, take a brisk 10-minute walk outside, or just give yourself those 5 minutes to get up and focus on something else.

    1. Putting It Off

No matter how much anyone of us may love our jobs, there’s always that one task (or many) that we just dread. Putting it off or reserving a spot for it at the end of your to-do list is counterproductive, and stressful. Instead of knowing that this task is there looming, embrace it and tackle it head-on first thing. You’re going to feel better and work more productively afterward.

    1. Undervaluing Your Network

When you’re actively looking for a job, networking is important but what about the rest of the time? Even when you’re completely satisfied in your career, it’s important to actively work on building your network. Eventually, the time will come when you’re ready for a new opportunity and having a network in place will help you get where you’re going.

    1. Staying Past Your Expiration Date

There’s a saying about not fixing something if it isn’t broke. This isn’t the approach you want to take with your career. It’s possible to feel stagnant in a job you enjoy, just as it’s possible to miss great opportunities if you’re feeling as though your current job is good enough. Most people don’t stay in the same job forever, and it’s important to recognize when you’ve reached your threshold for professional growth and move on.
