4 Lessons Every Woman in the Manufacturing Industry Should Know

Although the manufacturing industry is still a male-dominated field, things are changing every day. More women are entering the manufacturing sector and learning firsthand what it’s like to find solutions, use the latest technologies, and develop and create products that have come to define our society, from electronics, medicines, automobiles, and much more.

As with any industry, there are lessons women need to learn to succeed in manufacturing. Here are a few of them:

  1. Make Yourself an Invaluable Asset

Although no one is truly indispensable in the workplace, that doesn’t mean you can’t make your presence known by everyone on the floor or office. No matter what role you end up taking in the manufacturing industry, do it well and you can guarantee the team will feel it every day you’re on the job.

  1. Always Stay Professional

Let’s face it, manufacturing jobs such as machinists and craft workers have, for many decades, been dominated by men. So, women who enter the industry are often viewed as outsiders and can feel targeted at times.

The good news is, you have the law by your side. Even if your colleagues act like the playground bullies you had in grade school, stay professional and raise the issue through the proper channels. If that doesn’t work, talk to your attorney to take legal action.

  1. Dream Big

The manufacturing industry is a fast-paced world with multiple opportunities for personal growth and career advancement. Seize every opportunity that comes your way and work hard to hone your abilities. Keep at it and you’ll eventually get you where you want to go. This is, of course, easier said than done. Everyone has reservations, but timidity is not the mindset of someone who will reach the top. So, the next time an opportunity presents itself, jump at the chance.

  1. Grow Your Network

You’ll have heard people say that a mentor in the workplace is someone everyone should have. What they don’t tell you, however, is how to connect with them. Unfortunately, there isn’t exactly a how-to guide to getting people to mentor you. What you can do is learn as much as you can from others whenever possible. Your manager, for example, can be a goldmine of information if you bothered to ask him questions about how to do things or how things work outside of your job description. Bottom line? Be inquisitive and absorb as much information as you can from your peers.
