How to Improve Your Workplace, Without Affecting Your Budget

Studies have shown that when employees feel motivated and appreciated, their productivity increases. During these unprecedented times, however, it can be difficult to justify extra expenditures to reward people for their hard work and dedication.

Here are 10 simple ways you can improve employee morale, without spending money:

1. Office Tour

Take an afternoon and walk around the office. Stop at each person’s desk, and personally thank them for all of their hard work.

2. Early Weekend

Give your employees – and yourself – a little extra time on the weekend. Let everyone leave three hours early on a Friday, or come in three hours late on a Monday.

3. Put It in Writing

Send out a company-wide email recognizing your employees for all of their hard work. Mention people by name, and make sure to include the CEO on the mailing list.

4. Give Back

Find opportunities for your employees to give back to the community. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

    • Participate in a mentoring program
    • Hot a clothing or canned food drive
    • Volunteer at a local shelter
    • Organize a highway cleanup
    • Collect donations for charities

5. Recognize Hobbies

Give your employees the opportunity to share their passions. Feature employee artwork in common areas, organize book and/or music clubs, and facilitate group activities such as bike riding or hiking.

6. Encourage Feedback

Make sure your employees know their voices will be heard. Encourage and acknowledge feedback.

7. Celebrate Together

Recognize that your employees have a life outside of work. Acknowledge and celebrate major life events such as weddings, births, and graduations.

8. Go Remote

Let your employees work from home when they can. During this global pandemic, companies have found online solutions to make remote offices effective. Let your employees work where they are safest and most comfortable.

9. Build the Team

Start an Employee of the Month program. Have your employees vote to determine who will receive the honor.

10. Ask Me (Almost) Anything

Let your employees get to know a little more about you. Host a Q& A session, either in person or online, and answer questions about your life outside of work. Give them an opportunity to get to know you.
