Navigating Employment and Government Benefits

Government benefits are typically designed to help cover critical gaps during periods of financial uncertainty or low income. Two widely used programs include unemployment benefits a person may receive after exiting a position and food benefits that ensure healthy, nutritious meals are affordable.

While these programs are designed to help, many people don’t realize that there are strict requirements for maintaining eligibility. Often, those involve either working or actively seeking and maintaining gainful employment.

If You Want to Make Sure You’re Ready to Navigate Employment and Government Benefits, Here’s What you Need to Know:

Employment Requirements for Government Benefits

Many government benefits designed to assist low-income households do have requirements involving employment. If you’re unemployed and receiving unemployment benefits, you’re typically required to perform a minimum of three job search activities every week to maintain eligibility. At least two of those must involve submitting an application or resume, while the third activity can involve applying for a job but may also include attending job fairs, taking a resume review course, or specific alternatives.

For the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), individuals between the ages of 16 and 59 who can work are required to follow some rules. Those can include not voluntarily quitting a position or reducing your work hours below 30 per week without a reasonable justification. Otherwise, registering for work or participating in SNAP Employment and Training (E&T) or workfare is potentially mandatory, though there are some exceptions.

As a result, striving to secure or maintain employment is often a critical part of the equation. Fortunately, meeting the requirements above doesn’t have to be a challenge. By taking advantage of the right resources, you can find a suitable job that either eliminates your need for government benefits, or that allows you to maintain your eligibility while earning an income.
