Staying healthy during long workweeks can be a job in itself. If you’re working 60+ hour workweeks or 12- hour days, your body can easily become more fatigued, leaving your immune system stressed and weakened. Plus, working around other people for long hours puts you in contact with germs and bacteria for longer stretches of time, which can put you at greater risk for getting sick, particularly during the fall flu season

Here are some simple tips to keep you healthier and able to do your best work for as long as the job requires:

  1. Fit in a Workout

If you’re already on your feet all day, the last thing you might want to do is get up even earlier to take a jog. Plus, who has the time? Science has shown that moderate and regular exercise can strengthen the immune system. It can also help prevent burnout and improve mental clarity and concentration. Plus, you don’t need to fit in all your healthy movement into one sitting or complete a CrossFit class to reap the benefits – lunch break walks and yoga count too.

  1. Eat Right

Long hours aren’t always conducive to meal prep or healthy food choices. If you’re grabbing something quick so you can get back to it, remember that not all fast food and vending machine options are created equal. Try to stick to foods with a good amount of protein and limited added sugars and salts. Smoothies or veggie drinks made without added sugars are also a good choice for a quick meal that’s also good fuel.

  1. Make the Most of Your Free Time

When you get to carve out some ‘you’ time, try to balance all those things you have to do with the things you want to do or things that can encourage long term health. Whether that’s relaxing with a book, catching a concert, taking an extra long walk with the dog, or finally squeezing in a nap, it’s important to make time for yourself and give your mind and your body a break.

In order to do your best work, you need to make sure your health is always a priority, and luckily a few small changes can make a big difference.
